Compulsive Pedestrian?

April 6, 2008

This is a new blog about carless living. Walking, using public transportation, hitching rides (on occasion), biking, laughing at bitter drivers stuck in traffic… ;-)

I’ve been a compulsive pedestrian all my life. Well, at least since age 1yo or so. What d’you know, my mother made me do it. And it’s been going on for 34 years. Nothing to complain about. I don’t have a problem. I don’t need to go into Pedestrians Anonymous. Really, I swear!

While I did take driving lessons and have driven a few times before, I was never compelled to get a driver’s license. Oh, it’s not that I’m completely against the idea of driving a car. I understand cars can be quite important for many people. But cars just don’t fit in my lifestyle.

Yeah, as you can guess, people here in North America are completely taking aback by this. “Hey, I saw you walking the other day. Are you ok?” What’s even more difficult to explain is that I’ve been moving around quite a bit in the last little while. But I’ve been doing all of it without driving. It’s been fun.

Oh, sure, I occasionally wish I could drive. And I’ll probably end up as an occasional driver, at some point. Then again, maybe not.

In the meantime, I’ll occasionally post stuff about my pedestrian compulsion, hoping it might help others cope with this addiction to using their feet directly on pavement.
